So this is the first work we had to do for GDD-110 and it is pretty amazing how fast I learned to just fool around with PhotoShop. This activity was meant for us to first plan which template we would use in the presentation of that ancient hand game. To choose between the templates we first had to draw some thumbnails and each one being a simple template. Those are the thumbnails I did:
They weren't so elaborated since they were just meant to guide me through which way I would want to use to present the game. Also thumbnails are composed of simple sketches, meaning shapes that can guide you in a story or in this case guide me in choosing the best template to present the activity.
While doing my templates I decided to go all over the place by first doing some formal templates where everything was in place, consisting of rectangular and square formed frames. Then I went to a more artistic heading but continued with a formal organization of the graphs, intro and rules. At last I got more creative with different kinds of shaped frames, like circular, rectangular and square formed frames, and also made a different arch shape in the title of the last thumbnail. All of them were pretty creative, but as I like my things straight in place and organized I decided to stick with my first templates, which I kind of combined in my presentation.
After combining my templates I decided to go look for some images in which I would use in the presentation of the game. There were so many images to choose that I kept on searching more and more
until I found images that would help the viewer understand the rules and the gestures. I not only wanted for it to be a boring lesson, so I chose an image that would bring some humor into the presentation, with the joke of the Rock, Paper, and Scissors playing tennis the viewer can understand the game while reading a joke. I chose the left image because it is "complete", meaning it shows the categories of Win, Lose, and even when there is a Draw. The bottom one was chosen for its simpleness, which means that with few elements it describes not only the gestures but who wins and what each gesture means. Those three images will make any one understand clearly how to play R,P,S.
With Adobe Photoshop I created a document with dimensions 900 x 800 pixels, the only thing I did was cropped the images and organized them in that document.
So finally after creating a template, and finding my images that describe the game, I started placing the elements in their place with Photoshop. I created a document with dimensions 9 x 11 inches, and started by doing the Heading and choosing a font that would call attention even though it'll be in black and white. I chose that template since in my eyes it looks more organized and formal, and since it is an actual work I thought it would be best to give information first and then bring the lessons through images.
Just a reminder I was the one that wrote the introduction and the rules in this paper meaning even though I could've copied and pasted from a site I felt better just to write in my own words and separate the rules in my own way. Also the last thing was that I used the same font in both the titles and the description which made the sense of unification in the paper. Finally, the only thing that made me a little mad was after transforming the size of the graphics some of its resolution got pretty low, which caused the written parts in the images to get illegible. In general I really liked the paper, since it was something I wrote and something that reflects me in it for its organization.
I believe that the use of humor is a great way to a explain a game. No one wants to get bored with the instructions of a game they want to play. It is a very nice touch to add humor with the rules. Very nice way to show the way you are doing this project. Also the templates have a very nice way to catch someones attention. But it is coming together nicely.

DeleteI love the humor of the graphic to the bottom right, it adds a nice touch to the page. However, the detailed graphic representing the rules (bottom left) is very large and may need to be scaled down or arranged differently. Maybe try an use the words of the rules to describe the detailed image. Good job though!
ReplyDeleteIts true a picture is worth a thousand words and these graphics are worth 3000 words.
ReplyDeleteVincent DeStefano- I thought the thumbnails were very simple yet intricate. The idea of showing the game through pictures instead of just words. The content in this post is very good, and very refined.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you incorporated different shapes in the thumbnails like the circles and curved header.
ReplyDeleteI love the humor aspect you added, as I did the same but not on the same level as you. It definitely helps the person want to get involved in the game. I also like the bottom left image you have for the rock paper scissors because it is not something I have seen and it makes me more interested in your instructions. So often with games, or even board games, the instructions are black and white and its great to see someone bring some color into their actual instructions!
ReplyDeleteExtravagant thumbnails, nice job. The large graphic is too small to see in prototype, would suggest making it larger with less text. Good graphics.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are great! They're very creative and I'm excited to see what your final product will be!
ReplyDeleteStraight forward and to the point, but a little text heavy, too for a game so simple
ReplyDeleteYour ideas are great and I really like your selection of pictures. You should try and do one of your bottom layouts because you played every well with the circle shape.
